I have flat feet and wear orthotics. The 7s were good because they matched the shape of my foot. The 9s are bad because the raised plastic arch mashes into my foot with every step. After running three miles, my feet were killing me. I switched back to my 7s, and my feet didn't hurt. Fortunately, the store took back my 9s and I bought a different brand of shoe that more closely matched the basic design of the old 7s.If you've liked the Trance brand in the past because they work well with your flat feet, the new Trance 9s probably won't work for you any more. If you have naturally high or normal arches, then maybe the new Trances will fit your feet better than the old versions. I was very disappointed that Brooks decided to change the shoe so much.

I did have to purchase a size smaller than I typically run. It took a day or so to get used to the thong part of the shoe between my toes, but after that, they've been totally comfortable. I am seven months pregnant right now and these shoes support my feet (high arches and all) very comfortably even during walking and daily life. Love 'em.
